A visit to my grandfathers village, Leivadia, was on our route that day as we headed for Agros village.
It is a small village in between Alithinou and Pollystypos village in Pitsilia area. Small but beautiful (about 10 people live there now) like the so many villages with history and tradition in Cyprus.
We stopped to visit the Church of Agia Paraskevi, a very old and important Church of the area. The icon of Agia Paraskevi is estimated around 800 A.C. and the Church soon after. The Church as seen today was extended to accommodate the needs of the people in 1878.
Inside the Church one can see the very old wall paintings of Saints of Byzantine art. Outside the Church is the grave of the previous Bishop of Limassol, Chrysanthos, who was born and raised in Leivadia.
Until now 3 restorations have been made to the Church and the icons have been recently under maintenance. Most of them carry the date of 1878, but it is yet unknown if the original dates have been found.
