Just opposite the Church of Holy Cross at Pedoulas lays a monument dedicated to the Balkan Wars of 1912 and 1913.
The monument presents also a local hero, Michalis Stivaros who was born in Pedoulas in 1892. Stivaros was a student at the Athens medical school when the war begun and joined the Greek armed forces.
He was killed on December 1912 at the battle of Bizani. Stivaros was one of the estimated 1,500-1,800 Cypriots that joined the Greek army against the Ottoman Empire at the first Balkan war of 1912.
