Cave of "Panagia Chrysospiliotissa", Deftera village, Nicosia (Part 2)

Cave of "Panagia Chrysospiliotissa"
(Part 2)

After we finished our visit inside the cave we found outside an elder man who was sitting there gathering the "prayer requests" of visitors to pass it on to the priest later on.

He asked us if we have been there before and talked us about the cave and the Miracles of Holy Mother.

We sat there for a while and discussed many things with Mr George and he went along to tell us how the cave was discovered.

It was probably on the 19th century when Cyprus was under Ottoman rule. A high commissioner from Turkey was visiting Cyprus and while he was riding his horse near the area he fell off the cliff. He immediately asked Holy Mother to spare his life and he would pass on all land around into the hands of the locals living there.

Holy Mother spared his life and he survived the fall. He fell on a place near the cave where he saw light coming out. When he went inside he saw the icon of Holy Mother. Recognizing the miracle that just happened he ordered that all land around that area will be given to the Christians living in the village near by. The icon remained there for visitors to pray until a few years ago.
