A Hero of the October events 1931
Leaving Agios Theodoros village in Pitsilia going towards Nicosia, we came across the monument dedicated to Onoufrios Klerides.
Onoufrios Klerides died in the age of 17 in the "October Events" of 1931 outside the Governor's palace in Nicosia.
At that time Cyprus had just been sold by Turkey to England and was now an official part of the empire. The new Governor imposed heavy taxes on the citizens twice in a year. The Greek-Cypriot members of the parliament reacted by stepping down from their positions and soon after a demonstration followed outside the Governors palace.
During the demonstration things got out of control and the police responded by shooting at the protesters. Onoufrios Klerides was killed that day during the shooting at the age of 17.
